Melton Mowbray
Ewe lambs from Richard and Rachel Sharp’s Belvoir View Flock topped the Beltex entry at the Winter Warmers sale of females at Melton Mowbray Market on Saturday, 28 December, where entries met a strong demand throughout to achieve a 100% clearance rate.
Selling for the top price of 700gns was Belvoir View Fortress ET, a Callacrag Cowboy daughter bred from Belvoir View Duchess, herself a daughter of the home-bred Belvoir View Apple Jack. This well-grown lamb sold over the internet and heads north to Aberdeenshire to join Stuart Wood’s Woodies Flock.
The Sharps, from Eaton, Grantham, also welcomed the second equal highest price of 680gns when their Belvoir View Ferris Wheel ET, again by the Callacrag Cowboy ram, sold to Chris Wright for his Brothertoft Flock, Kirton Drove, Boston, for 680gns. His dam is Jewitt Dream On, by Kingledores Churchill.
Close behind on 600gns was Belvoir View Fancy Cider ET, this time by Belvoir View Apple Jack and out of the Wern Sycharth-sired Corra Agnes. She sold to Geraint Evans.
RM and EF Davey paid 580gns for Belvoir View Fire Desire, this time by Belvoir View Diamond Flame and out of Belvoir View Desire, by the home-bred Apple Jack ram.
The 680gns price tag was matched by the dearest of the in-lamb females in the shape of Clarison Elle, a shearling ewe from Claire Morris, Braunston, Daventry. Scanned with a pair to the Belgian import, Viril De Nobelhaye, this Matt’s Wazza daughter is out of Clarison Caledonia, herself by Dooley Amazing. Elle caught the eye of DM Leedham.
Two aged ewes from Chris Wright’s Brothertoft Flock were next in the trade stakes when Brothertoft Clara sold for 600gns and Dooley Wealth realised 550gns. Clara, a Dooley Affinity daughter bred from a Boxty Wishful-sired Pentland ewe, also sold to RM and EF Davey served by Glantre Elliot.
The Daveys paid a further 550gns for Chris’ Dooley Wealth, a six-year-old originally bred by Dave Thornley. Her pedigree features Jet V/D Drie Musschen on to Dooley Paloma, a daughter of Herkel V/D Vosseberg, and she changed hands in lamb to Withy Trees Eric.
Evan Jones’ Merton Hall Easy As Ewe, a shearling ewe from the flock at Smithy Fen, Cottenham, matched that 550gns when sold to J Jack. Selling served by Dooley Demertius, her sire is Munch Conker while her dam is a Clovis V/h Groentenhof daughter in the shape of Dooley Collete.
Averages: Six aged ewes, £490; five shearling ewes, £561; 14 ewe lambs, £489.
