There was a strong demand for shearling rams at the Beltex Scotland sale at Lawrie and Symington’s Lanark centre on Thursday, 15 September, where the average improved by more than £200 on the year with a 94% clearance rate as trade was led at 6200gns by an entry from a debut vendor.

That was Grant Dinnie’s Tanqueray Gladiator from his 10-ewe flock near Muir of Fowlis, Alford, that was established just four years ago. Selling late on in the shearling line-up, this son of Woodies Edgy is out of an imported V/D Harlembois ewe and after a flurry of bids between two pedigree breeders, was knocked down to Brian Ryder for his Ryder Flock near Moffat.

The Reserve Champion from the pre-sale show, Jim Hamilton’s Mid Shawtonhill Gypsy King, was next in the trade stakes when he attracted a 4000gns bid from Alan Miller and Stuart Wood, of the Lurg and Woodies flocks from Aberdeenshire. Sired by the 9000gns Clary Fly-Boy and out of the Quarrymount William Wallace daughter, Shawtonhill Dottie, Gypsy King had a successful show season before heading to Lanark.

Jim, from near Chapelton, welcomed a further 2800gns for Mid Shawtonhill Gangster, another by the Fly-boy ram while his dam is Mid Shawtonhill Easy, herself by Matt’s Wazza. He sold to Ian and Patsy Hunter, of Dalchirla, Muthill, Crieff.

The Heatheryhall Flock from local breeders, Alfie and Ann Taylor, Pettinain, always receives a good trade and this year was no different when their Supreme Champion from the pre-sale show realised 3000gns. That was Heatheryhall Godzilla ET, which was pulled to the top of the shearling ram class before tapped out as Male and then Supreme Champion by Kevin Buckle, of the Buckles Flock near Kirkby Stephen. Selling to JA Gibson, Galston, this son of the 30,000gns Buckles Dark Dawn is out of Heatheryhall Wallflower, a Tacherhill Regal daughter.

Another Dark Dawn son named Heatheryhall Gi Joe ET made 1650gns selling to J Wight, Biggar. His dam is Heatheryhall Diamond, another by the aforementioned Quarrymount William Wallace.

DW Telfer paid 1400gns to take a full brother named Heatheryhall Ghost ET home to Crawfordjohn.

Hitting 1800gns when snapped up by the team at DF Contracting, Logiealmond, was David Padkin’s Muirhouse Godfather ET from Auchenheath. His pedigree features the Skiddaw View Boggle-sired Muirhouse Dahlia and Tullylagan Floyd.

Up next at 1700gns was Faughhill Glen Affric ET from Cameron and Chloe Cormack, Oxnam, Jedburgh. This Heatheryhall Fireman Sam son is out of the Callacrag Barbarian-sired Eildon Coy and was knocked down to J Jardine and Son, Balmaclellan, Castle Douglas.

Making 1450gns for Jimmy Bell and Rachael Buckle, from Auchengray, Carnwath, was Cottage Gloopy, an Edendiack Eerie son bred from Cottage Estier, another by Quarrymount William Wallace. Forking out the cash was SA Robson, Otterburn, Newcastle.

Close behind on 1400gns when sold to Ingraston Farm, Dolphinton, West Linton, was Biggarshiels Ghandi, a Woodwick Elvis daughter from TW Sanderson. His dam from the flock at Elsrickle, Biggar, is Callacrag Dancer, a Mortons Cheeky Boy daughter.

Leading the aged ram entry at 1200gns was Aviemore Festival 5 ET from Gary Morrison, Tarbrax, West Calder. This two-shear son of Corstane Whistler is out of Aviemore Casey, an Airyolland Avicii daughter, and sold in a two-way split to R Hamilton and Sons, Strathaven, and E Hamilton and Partners, Linlithgow.

Ram lambs peaked at 1000gns when David Cunningham paid that to take Andrew Baillie’s Callacrag Harry to work in the Walkerdyke Flock near Strathaven. This son of Wannop’s Firecracker is out of Callacrag Flossy, a Clary Desperado daughter from the flock near Carstairs.

Andrew also led the female entry when Lynsey Wright and Andy McAllister paid 920gns for Callacrag Gala and a further 800gns for Callacrag Gemma ET to join their Blairmore Flock near Balfron Station. Gala is by Ainstable Factorial and out of the Faughhill Detroit-sired CAllacrag Escort, while Gemma is by Glenpark Ebay and out of Callacrag Blessed, an Eildon Wolverine daughter.

John Cousar, Craigie, Kilmarnock, received 680gns from Bryan Wylie, Balbrydie Flock, Kirriemuir, for Howcommon Gin. She is by the Clary Fly-boy ram that did well for the Hamiltons, and out of the Woodies Razzledazzle-sired Howcommon Electra.

The Female Champion, James Hodge’s Riggroad Groovy Chick ET from Auchinleck, made 620gns. Sired by Sired by Hackney Dazzler and out of Vicky’s Daisy, a Murrays Crackajack daughter, she joins Mark and Ellie Jennings’ Hallcrake Flock near Kendal.

The dispersal of William Lennox’ Netherholm Flock from Strathaven peaked at 650gns when Gavin Donald paid that for Netherholm Doris. Born in 2018 out of Netherholm Sabina, a daughter of the imported ram called The Drifter, she is by Osprey Candyman.

Cameron and Chloe Cormack paid 580gns for the very last in the catalogue, Netherholm Gillian, a gimmer by Withy Trees Flying Dutchman out of Netherhom Dulcia, herself by Osprey Candyman.

At 520gns was another by the Withy Trees ram, Netherholm Grace, which sold to Grant Maxwell, Faughhill Flock, Melrose. Her dam is another Osprey Candyman daughter in the shape of Netherholm Enid.

Stewart Kennedy secured Netherholm Erin to join the family’s Borlick Flock near Aberfeldy for 500gns. A three-year-old out of a Skiddaw View Walter daughter, she is by Osprey Candyman.

Averages: Two aged rams, £1155 (3 x £1365 in 2021); 93 shearling rams, £983 (133 x £774); 20 ram lambs, £626 (17 x £1621); 36 shearling ewes, £460 (36 x £511). Netherholm part-dispersal – 23 aged ewes, £271; 15 shearling ewes, £289.
