A pair of full brothers from north of the Border led the way at the Northern Beltex Club’s show and sale at CCM Skipton on Friday and Saturday, 1 and 2 September, when they not only claimed the Male Champion and Reserve tickets, but also went on to secure the top two prices of 8000gns and 4500gns.

Consigned by John and Emma Green, together with sons, Gilbert and William, from near Lilliesleaf, Melrose, the sale leader was the Male and Supreme Champion, Greenall Harvey Wallbanger ET which is by the £10,000 private purchase, Heatheryhall Fireman Sam, and out of the Rathbone Tony-sired Artnagullion Amber. After some strong bidding, he was knocked down to the Belfield family who run the Boothlow Flock near Sheen, Buxton.

Notably, the Reserve Male Champion that sold for the second highest price of 4500gns was a full embryo brother in the shape of Greenall Hells Bells ET which this time sold to F and JS Gargett, Westwick, Barnard Castle.

The four-figure prices kept coming for the Greens, whose pen of seven cashed in to average £2929 thanks to a duo at 2500gns each. First and selling to Tim Hunter for his Skelton Whin Flock on Bridlington Road, Hunmanby, Filey, was Greenall Houblon which is by the 7000gns Skipton purchase, Artnagullion Feux, and out of Beautry Tansy, a Rathbone Leader daughter.

Matching that 2500gns was another by the Feux ram, Greenall Hector, which this time is out of the Dean Brow Carlos-bred Greenall Fiddlestocks. He heads to near Little Thorpe, Ripon, with Rodney Brothers Plant.

Irish raider, Matthew Burleigh, from Kinawley Road, Shanra, Enniskillen, saw his best two sell for 4000gns apiece, with the first of these being Matt’s Heineken ET which stood third at the pre-sale show. His sire is the private purchase, Buckles Fizzy Pop, while his dam is the 11,000gns Hackney Elanor, an Airyolland Asulam daughter. He caught the eye of F and MP Allinson and Son, Baldersdale, Barnard Castle.

Also hitting 4000gns when sold to the judge of the pre-sale show, Jonathan Frankland, of Frankland Farms, was the unshown Matt’s High Ball ET which again is by the Buckles Fizzy Pop ram but this time out of the Matt’s Defender daughter, Matt’s Equipped.

Fellow Northern Irish breeder, Gary Scott, also welcomed a good trade with a top of 3000gns followed at 2100gns and a further four at four-figure prices. Selling to Robert Garth for his Kasden Flock near Clapham for that 3000gns was the Tullylagan Figo-sired Bessy Bell Hardy, which is bred from the Mortons Charles-sired Bessy Bell Fine.

Local buyer, JS Stephenson, Bordley, paid 2100gns for Bessy Bell Hanky ET, another by the Figo ram but this time out of the Kingledores Dazzler daughter, Bessy Bell Fiesty, from the flock near ***.

James Whiteford and son, Jack, from near Brampton, saw their dearest also sell to the Rodney Brothers Plant team, this time for 2400gns. Bred out of the Airyolland Aragon-sired Tercrosset Diana, Tercrosset Harlequin is another by the Artnagullion Feux ram.

Celebrating a strong day’s trading were Brian and Sabine Hall whose class-winning ram lamb, Ainstable Jukebox ET, also realised 2400gns when knocked down to Johnny Aiken for his Vogue Flock near Hesket Newmarket, Wigton. By the same Kingledores Engleburt that bred the couple’s 30,000gns shearling sold at Carlisle, Ainstable Hammer, Jukebox’s dam is Matt’s Clinker, a Hackney Wonderboy daughter.

The Halls, from ***, also received 2000gns from SA Rural Services, Charing Heath, Ashford, for Ainstable Honorable. His pedigree features the Black Jack Casanova-sired Ainstable Femme Fatale and Smart Ass Dark Horse.

Matching that 2000gns was Elizabeth McAllister’s Artnagullion Hustle from near Kels, Ballymena, brought out by brother, William. The dam of this Artnagullion Fighter son is Ravara Exit Wounds, a daughter of an V/H Groentenhof ram, and he heads to Bolton Abbey, Skipton, with JGE Heseltine and Son.

The Artnagullion team started their well with a shout of 1400gns from the Beckwiths of the Sharphaw Flock just along the road near Gargrave for their first prize aged ram, Glenview Goldie, which is by Ballinakill Fagan and out of Glenview Emma, a Sheephaven Casonova daughter.

A small entry of ram lambs also reached 1800gns for Jack and Tom Buckle’s Broxty Just My Style from near Kirkby Stephen. Packed full of breeding, being by Ardstewart Armani and out of the Gyffin Dexter-sired Broxty Flawless, he sold to the Cottage Flock of Jimmy Bell and Rachel Buckle, near Carluke.

Females broke the four-figure barrier on three occasions for the three top prize winners with the dearest at 1500gns being Brian Hall’s second prize shearling ewe and Reserve Female, Ainstable Honeysuckle ET. Again by Kingledores Engleburt, she is out of the Woodies Wicked-sired Ainstable Charade ET and sold to Dick Harrison, Keighley Road, Skipton, along with her flock mate, Ainstable Haiku ET.

Haiki is also by Engleburt while her dam is the Black Jack Casanova daughter, Ainstable Easter Egg.

James Whiteford’s Female Champion and Reserve Supreme, Tercrosset Honeycomb, sold to John Harbinson for his Glenkeen Flock across the water near Limavady. Yet another by Artnagullion Feux, she is out of Tercrosset Babyspice, an Airyolland King of Clubs daughter.

Averages: Two aged rams, £1260; 199 shearling rams, £951 (175 x £1093 in 2022); 10 ram lambs, £1076 (25 x £990); 70 shearling ewes, £511 (65 x £513).
