Swffryd Shearling Shines at the Royal Welsh

Beltex classes at this year’s Royal Welsh Show enjoyed ideal showing weather and a strong turnout of sheep, despite bluetongue restrictions meaning the event became an all-Welsh affair. Judge Jock McMillan found his Overall Champion in a powerful shearling ram from Aled Groucott’s Swffryd flock.

The champion, Swffryd Kick Ass, is a homebred shearling ram by Heatheryhall Jumanji ET and out of Swffryd Golden Girl. He impressed the judge with his power, correctness and breed character. “The champion is a tremendous example of the breed,” said Mr McMillan.

The shearling, born April 2024, is from the Hackney Treacle line and has already enjoyed success in the show ring, having stood Reserve Overall Champion at Three Counties Show earlier this summer.

Aled Groucott said: “He’s a natural born shearling and I’m very proud of this one. He’s everything I’ve ever wanted to breed.

“He’s big, long, mobile, correct, upright and flashy; keeping his character and muscle with it, which I think is the future of the Beltex breed.”

He later confirmed that the champion would now be heading to the Premier Sale at Lockerbie.

Mr Groucott also secured the Female Championship with his aged ewe, and the Reserve Female Championship with his ewe lamb, cementing a strong outing for the Swffryd flock.

Standing Reserve Overall Champion was the Male Champion’s runner-up, Myna Kodak, a shearling ram from the Myna flock. By Culsh Ebenezer and out of Myna Diamond, the March-born ram will also be out at the Beltex Premier Sale.

With strong entries across the classes and plenty of interest ringside throughout the judging, the show provided a great showcase for the Beltex breed, as we approach this year’s all-important breeding sales.
