Beltex Scotland’s show and sale in Lanark saw a top price of 6,000gns for a Lurg ram lamb from Miller Farms, Inverurie, which won the sale night’s reserve overall championship.
Leading the catalogue of 277, which achieved an 85% clearance, was the Millers’ early March born substitute entry Lurg Lover Boy which had been a red rosette winner at the Scottish National Show the previous month. Sired by the 10,000gns Mellor Vale King Kong and out of the Buckles Dark Dawn-sired Lurg Honour – a winning ewe lamb at the 2022 Royal Highland. Lover Boy was purchased jointly by Messrs Taylor, Heatheryhall flock, Biggar, and Messrs Wainwright, Todhall flock, Cupar.
Shearling rams peaked at 5,200gns for Messrs Taylor, Heatheryhall. Their Heatheryhall Kryptonite is a son of the 42,000gns Todhall Hercules and out of Gordy’s Glamour Girl, a daughter of the 30,000gns Buckles Dark Dawn. The ram had been a consistent prize winner at many of this summer’s shows and took the blue rosette at the Lanark fixture. The buyers were David Cunningham and his son, also David, from Strathaven.
The overall championship title at the pre-sale show went to Whindyke Kebab King from Lanark regulars Alister Alister and Andrew Meikle, Helentongate, Symington. The hammer fell at 4,500gns for this son of Stonehills Herbert, who also sired the whole Whindyke consignment. The shearling is out of Whindyke Hairspray, a daughter of Loandhu Elmo and he was bought jointly by the judge, Iain Struthers, Collielaw, Carluke and Jamie Gibson, Greenwall, Forth.
Alister also took a 3,600gns bid for his second shearling through the ring, Whindyke King Kong, the dam of which is Whindyke Happy Hour. He went to Messrs Shaw, West Lethans, Saline.
The sale’s female entry was lead by the section champion, from Kenny O’Connor, Woodside Avenue, Carstairs Junction. It was a shearling Kenny’s Kaboom and sold at 1,700gns to Messrs Taylor, Heatheryhall flock. She is a daughter of the 42,000gns Todhall Hercules and out of Heatheryhall High, which had been purchased at the Heatheryhall production sale in 2023.
The Lanark sale also hosted the full dispersal of the Padkin Flock on behalf of Alistair and Wendy Padkin, plus the final dispersal of the Ayrhsire based Cochrane’s flock.
Padkin sheep sold to 2,800gns twice, firstly for Padkin Kerry, a daughter of Aviemore Furore 2 and out of Padkin Bizzy Lizzy. This one went to the newly established Tonley flock of Messrs Wattie, Alford, Aberdeen. At the same price was Padkin Kerria, the reserve breed champion at Lesmahagow Show in May. Another daughter of the same Aviemore sire she was purchased by Jamie Gibson, Greenwall, Forth.
The Cochrane’s dispersal shearlings sold to 800gns twice, to Messrs Wattie, and I. M. Braund, Devon.
Lawre and Symington auctioneer Archie Hamilton said trade had been seasonally good for the better end “top drawer” entries as it always was at this time of year.
