Gyffin shearling ram tops Welsh Beltex Club sale at Ruthin at 1,750gns

Welsh Beltex Club Show & Sale— Thursday 3rd September 2026

A catalogue of 43 Beltex sheep — one yearling ewe, 14 MV-accredited yearling rams and 28 non-MV yearling rams — came forward for the Welsh Beltex Club’s annual show and sale at Ruthin, with judge Osian Davies, Llys Farm, sorting the show at 10am ahead of a busy sale conducted by auctioneer Rich Lloyd. Demand was strong and predominantly local, with 37 lots realising a total of £39,742.50 (37,850gns) and an overall average of £1,074.12.

Overall champion tops the trade

Edward Cyril Lloyd Lewis’s Gyffin flock, Pen y Bryn, Llanrwst Road, Gyffin, Conwy, took the supreme championship and the 1,750gns top price with Lot 2002, Gyffin Loxo (ECL.L012).

An AI-bred twin born on 2 February 2025, Loxo is by the Clary Dumfries ET son line — his sire tracing to Hackney Braveheart ET — and out of Glan-Y-Mor Hippo, herself a daughter of Glan-Y-Mor Gary from Glan-Y-Mor Enchanted ET. Having won the shearling ram class and been tapped out as male champion, Osian Davies made him his supreme champion, and he went on to head the trade at 1,750gns, selling to D & L Parry Contracting, 25 Bryn Paen, Llangoed, Beaumaris.

Reserve supreme and female champion

The same home also claimed the reserve supreme championship with its yearling ewe, ECL.L018, which took the yearling ewe class and the female championship. As the only female forward, she found a ready home at 850gns with J T Rowlands, Mynydd Adda, Llanddeusant, Caergybi.

Reserve male champion to Coleshill

Standing second in the shearling ram class and reserve male champion was Lot 2020, Coleshill Logie (BEV.L002), from Judith Bevan’s Coleshill flock, Manor Farm, Holywell Road, Flint. A March 2025-born single by Quarrymount Grand Turismo ET and out of Coleshill Hot Diamond, he was catalogued as a shapey ram and a great addition to any flock.

Third in the class was Lot 2024, Geirn Lumpy (CCO.L073), from Cennydd Owen’s Geirn flock, Carmel, Llanerchymedd, Anglesey. He was one of a 22-strong run of first-crop sons of Carstairs Jolly Giant ET, bought at the 2024 Kelso Ram Sale and offered here for the first time as a proven sire, and he is bred from Tercrosset Ember.

W P and O Evans’s Myna flock, Bodwrdin, Soar, Bodorgan, filled fourth and fifth places, the latter with Lot 2005, Myna Lethal Weapon (WPE.L004), a Smart Ass Knight Rider ET son out of Myna Grace. Cennydd Owen completed the placings in sixth with Lot 2043, Geirn Lizard (CCO.L042), another Carstairs Jolly Giant ET son.

Leading prices and a strong local trade

Behind the champion, two rams sold at 1,700gns apiece — one to D C Evans, Cernioge Mawr, Pentrefoelas, Betws y Coed, and the other to A C, M O and E A Jones, Carreg Coediog, Betws y Coed. J D Pierce, Bryn Deunydd, Llannefydd, Denbigh, went to 1,450gns, with G Briggs & Son, Wood Farm, Wirswall, Whitchurch, and Huw Rowlands, Gell Bach, Marian Glas, among the other volume buyers.

Coleg Cambria’s Llysfasi campus at Ruthin was the day’s leading purchaser, taking four rams to a total of 5,100gns, while Ifan Hughes, Four Crosses Farm, Glanrafon, Corwen, also secured four for 3,950gns in total. E Pritchard & Son, Pant yr Onnen, Llannefydd, took a brace for a combined 2,400gns, and J A Jones, Fferam y Llan, Mynydd Mechell, Amlwch, two MV rams for 2,750gns together.

Buyers came overwhelmingly from Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire and Gwynedd, with further demand from Flintshire, Shropshire and Powys, underlining the strength of the Beltex as a terminal sire across North and Mid Wales.
