The Beltex Sheep Society show and sale at Carlisle on September 27 saw a strong, albeit reduced entry as buyers and breeders returned to Harrison and Hetherington’s Borderway Mart for the second sale at the market this season.
Topping the male trade was Quarrymount Kingdom, a ram from Brian Matthews’ Killeigh-based flock, Ireland. Sired by 45,000gns Lurg Grand Slam and out of Woodwick Heather, it sold for 2200gns to A Morton, Stirlingshire, having taken the reserve champion rosette in the pre-sale show.
Next best in the male section was a February-born lamb from the Hammond family’s Tullylagan flock. Selling for 1700gns, Tullylagan Larry is by Stonehills Kung Foo and out of Woodwick Golddigger. It sold to the Jones family, Machynlleth.
Females
Leading the female trade and matching the top price at the sale was Langlands Kiki, a shearling ewe from J&S Wilkinson. The ewe is by Matt’s Joker and out of Ardstewart Gaynor, and claimed the overall championship in the pre-sale show. Kiki sold to R and JP Mulholland, Carlisle, for 2200gns.
Two more shearling ewes from the same flock followed, with Langlands Katy selling for 1200gns to A Morton, Stirlingshire and Langlands Kayley knocked down to I and RA Watson, Bishop Auckland, for 1100gns. Both by homebred ewes, Katy is by Matt’s Joker, and Kayley is by Logie Durno Godfather.
