A ram lamb from an Aberdeenshire breeder led the Beltex Sheep Society’s September sale at Harrison and Hetherington’s Borderway Mart on Friday, 23 September, when Woodies Hero ET from Stuart Wood realised 3000gns.
This March-born son of the 30,000gns BorderEsk Finders Keepers is out of Stuart’s imported 1443 V/D Harlembois ewe from the flock near Skene, Westhill, and was knocked down to Gordy Harrison for his Gordy’s Flock near Carnwath, Lanarkshire.
Also from the Woodies Flock was Woodies Haribo ET which sold to C and D Rayson, Low Row, Brampton, for 1000gns. His pedigree features the 5000gns Woodies Gladiator on to Woodies Exquisitor, a Kingledores Demonstrator daughter.
Stuart’s son, Murray, was also in the money when his first prize ram lamb that also stood Reserve Male Champion realised 2000gns. That was Woodies Horatio ET which is again by the Finders Keepers ram while his dam is the 7500gns Buckles Babybel, a Plumtree Wonderful daughter. He heads back to Aberdeenshire to join Zoey Rennie’s Rennies Flock near Grange, Banffshire.
Murray welcomed a further 1000gns twice from Grant Dinnie who takes Woodies Hellraiser ET and Woodies Hell Fire ET to join his Tanqueray Flock near Muir of Fowlis. This pair or embryo brothers are by Vicky’s Gladiator and out of Woodies Cally, herself by a Van’t Rozenaken ram.
It was a good day for Jamie and Richard Jerman’s Brilley Flock all the way from Whitney-on-Wye, Herefordshire, when they secured the Male and Supreme Championship with a shearling ram, but it was their ram lamb named Brilley Huntsman ET that sold for the second top price of 2500gns to Jock McMillan for his Clary Flock near Newton Stewart. A full brother to the 25,000gns Brilley Hulk ET sold in August, he is by Ardstewart Fred Flintstone and out of the Topflite Al Pacino-sired Hackney Dior.
The Jermans’ Champion, Brilley Gold Finger, sold to the judge, Andrew Bishop, of the Bishops Flock near Eldersfield, Gloucestershire. His pedigree features another Al Pacino daughter in the shape of Greenfield Candy, and the record-holding Airyolland Castro.
A total of five sold for 2000gns apiece including a duo from James Whiteford, Brampton. First was Tercrosset Grizzly, which is by Swffryd Exclusive and out of Tercrosset Ella, herself by Ardstewart Coyote. He caught the eye of Gary Hall near Gilling West, Richmond.
Matching that 2000gns when knocked down to J and W Wilson, Creetown, Newton Stewart, was Tercrosset Ginger Ale which this time is by Airyolland Dipstick and out of the Tercrosset Wicked-sired Airyolland Nailer.
Ginger Ale’s full brother, Tercrosset Ginger Nina, realised 1600gns when sold to TJ Liverton and SA Carter, Thuxton, Norwich.
Two more lambs sold for 1000gns price tags, including John Ferguson’s Belvoir View Dusty-sired Vicky’s Huckleberryfinn from BallyraineyRoad, Comber, County Down. Bred out of the Orkney Eurostar-sired Vicky’s Flight of Fancy, he sold to Kirsty Dixon, Cowburn, Lockerbie.
Another 1000gns ram lamb transaction saw Tullylagan Highlander ET from the Hammond brothers, Darvel, Ayrshire, which sold to M Reid, Alloa. Sired by Ardstewart Einstein, his dam is Clary Daffny, a Clary Cavalier daughter.
Females
The last at 2000gns was the dearest of the females, Fronarth Gladioulus ET from Tomos Evans, Llanddarog, Carmarthen, which was originally bred by Sion Jones. Sired by Broughton Ale and out of the Muirton Buchan Loon daughter, Fronarth Earned It, she sold to Mark and Ellie Jennings for their Kendal-based Hallcrake Flock.
Brian Hall saw his second prize winner, Ainstable Geranium ET, sell to Jason and Sarah Wareham, Broad, Oak, Heathfield, for 1200gns. This Kingledores Engleburt daughter is out of Ainstable Dice, herself by Woodies Wicked.
The previous lot, Ainstable Gin ET, sold to Gordon Gray for his grandchildren’s Ettrick Flock near Lindean, Selkirk, for 1100gns. Bred from a different Woodies Wicked daughter, Ainstable Balderdash, she is by Black Jack Casanova.
Also realising 1100gns was Andrew Wainwright’s Todhall Gina which was knocked down to S and M Pickworth, Hexham. This Rathbone Alien daughter is out if the Callacrag Bull’s Eye-sired Todhall Eye Catcher from the flock near Cupar.
A consignment of ewe lambs from John Ferguson reached 750gns when Donnie Allan paid that to take Vicky’s Heidi ET to join his Ballochneck Flock near Buchlyvie, Stirling. Her pedigree features the Airyolland Choco-sired Woodies Exporter and Orkney Eurostar.
Averages: 38 shearling rams, £637 (51 x £628 in 2021); 25 ram lambs, £890 (35 x £909); 28 shearling ewes, £554 (46 x £674); six ewe lambs, £495 (7 x £224).
