Despite a small offering, in-lamb shearling ewes met a strong demand at the Beltex Scotland Club’s sale at Lawrie and Symington’s Lanark centre on Saturday, 11 December, where the pre-sale Champion from Robert and Jim Hamilton’s Shawtonhill flock topped the entry at 3800gns.

With the gimmer average increasing by more than £200 compared to 2020, the father and son duo also landed the Reserve Championship with their winning duo both going on to sell to the judge, Alan Miller, of the Lurg flock near Midmar, Inverurie.

Shawtonhill Faiza, R & J Hamilton, Champion, 3800gns

Leading the way was Shawtonhill Faiza, a daughter of the 15,000gns Tiree Donegal ram bought at Carlisle a couple years back, while her dam is Corra Cynthia, herself by Corstane Aaron. Faiza changed hands scanned with a pair to Heatheryhall Firework.

Mid Shawtonhill Fanny, J Hamilton, Reserve, 2000gns

Jim’s own Mid Shawtonhill Fanny, the Reserve Champion, realised 2000gns and sold in lamb to Clary Fly Boy. Her pedigree features Ryder Dewalt on to the Quarrymount William Wallace-bred Shawthonhill Datable.

The Hamiltons, from Chapelton, Strathaven, then received 1400gns when their Shawtonhill Ferne was knocked down to Orkney breeders, P and EM Dennison, Stronsay. She offers some different breeding being by the Double o Seven son, Shawtonhill Deacon Blue, and out of the Heatheryhall Batman-sired Shawtonhill Dream. She also sold in lamb to Clary Fly Boy.

Callacrag Flore, A Baillie, 1700gns

The very first lot in the ring, Andrew Baillie’s Callacrag Flore ET, got the sale off to a good start when she sold to local breeder, Billy Goodfellow, of the Roberton flock near Lanark, for 1700gns. Scanned with a single to the 8000gns Wannop’s Firecracker, Flore is out of the noted Callacrag Billie ewe, an Eildon Wolverine that topped Andrew’s reduction sale here a couple years back at 4000gns, while her sire is Lurg Emperor.

The very next lot, Callacrag Flosia, sold to the Sandersons of the Biggarshiels flock near Elsrickle, Biggar, carrying a pair to Vogue Empire. Sired by Glenpark Ebay, her dam from the flock near Carstairs, Lanark, is another by Eildon Wolverine in the shape of Callacrag Bonanza.

Averages: 18 shearling ewes, £1006 (34 x £799 in 2020).
