A shearling ewe from Tom and Jack Belfield proved to be the pick of the bunch at the Beltex Sheep Society Sale at Leek Auctions on Wednesday, 24 August, when she claimed both the Supreme Championship at the pre-sale show and the top price of 1500gns.

The sale, which saw shearling rams increase in average compared to the 2021 sale while the shearling ewe average dropped slightly due to last year’s record price at 2250gns, welcomed no fewer than five four-figure prices.

Boothlow Gigi ET, T & J Belfield, Female and Supreme Champion, 1500gns

Leading the way for the Belfield brothers, from near Sheen, Buxton, was their show gimmer from this year, Boothlow Gigi ET. By the 4500gns Buckles Eden Valley and out of the flock’s noted brood ewe, the Sharphaw Wade-sired Boothlow Berlinda, Gigi was knocked down to the judge, Matt Prince of the Stonedge Flock near Ashover.

Boothlow Gail, T & J Belfield, 800gns

Sticking with the female entry and Boothlow Gail sold to Ron Tomkinson for his Rojan Flock, Butterton, for 800gns. She offers different breeding being by the 4200gns Cardhu and out of Boothlow Dimple, an Airyolland Weapon daughter.

Gigi’s full sister, Boothlow Gingerbread ET, sold to Joshua Nadin for his Ox Hay Flock near Meerbrook, for 720gns.

Shearling rams from Andrew Wainwright’s Todhall Flock from Cupar, Fife, headed up the male entries at 1280gns with other entries to 1150gns and 1000gns.

Todhall Graphite, IA Wainwright, 1280gns

Dearest of these and selling for the second highest price of the night was Todhall Graphite which caught the eye of GR and SE Bailey who run the Barncroft Flock on Scamnel Lane, Chesby. His pedigree features Woodies Extreme on to Todhall Dani, a Rathbone Alien daughter.

Todhall Gentleman, IA Wainwright, 1150gns

The pen leader, the Todhall Firecracker-sired Todhall Gentleman, realised 1150gns when snapped up by A Simpson, Bradwell, Hope Valley. His dam is another Rathbone Alien daughter in the shape of Todhall Elsa.

Todhall Gio, IA Wainwright, Male Champion and Reserve Supreme, 1000gns

Andrew’s Reserve Champion, Todhall Gio, sold to R Challinor, Dilhorne, for 1000gns. Bred from the Callacrag Bull’s Eye daughter, Todhall Eye Catcher, Gio’s sire is Rathbone Alien.

Boothlow Hurrican, T & J Belfield, Reserve Male, 1000gns

Leading the ram lamb entry was the Reserve Male Champion from the Belfields, Boothlow Hurricane ET, which sold to two-year-old Jack Darlington for his JD Flock, Beresford Dale, Buxton. By the Boothlow Enterprise ram sold a couple years ago, his dam is Corstane Bilberry, herself a Broughton Willie Wonder daughter.

Averages: 12 shearling rams, £732 (21 x £712 in 2021); four ram lambs, £585 (2 x £609); 10 shearling ewes, £572 (15 x £595).
