It was the Reserve Champion that led the Beltex Sheep Society’s sale at Leek Auctions on Wednesday, 23 August, when Boothlow Huntsman ET from local lads, Tom and Jack Belfield, was knocked down for the top price of 1700gns.

13, Boothlow Huntsman ET, T & J Belfield, 1700gns

Tapped out as second prize shearling ram then Reserve Male and Reserve Supreme, Huntsman is a full brother to the Boothlow Enterprise ram sold to the Corstane and Broughton flocks a few years back, being by Broughton Cardhu and out of the Hackney Will.I.Am-sired Boothlow Bramble. He caught the eye of JM Robinson and heads to work near Swythamley, Macclesfield.

The Belfields, from Sheen, Buxton, received 1000gns twice including for Boothlow Hustler which sold to IG Forrester, Trent Vale, Stoke on Trent. His pedigree features Artnagullion Falcon on to Boothlow Flair, a Broughton Cardhu daughter.

26, Boothlow Honeycomb, T & J Belfield, 1000gns

Also making 1000gns was the first prize shearling ewe and Female Champion, Boothlow Honeycomb, which is this time by Belvoir View Dark Diamond and out of the Rathbone Cuba-bred Boothlow Daisy. Forking out the cash was WD Hatch and Co, Mottram St Andrew, Macclesfield.

J and B Fentem and Sons, Allsop En Le Dale, Ashbourne, paid 600gns for Honeycomb’s twin sister, Boothlow Hallelujah.

5, Todhall Harper ET, IA Wainwright, 1250gns

Back to the males at Andrew Wainwright all the way from Dairsie, Cupar, Fife, saw his two best sell for 1250gns. Selling to RB Eyre, Abney, Hope Valley, for that price was Wainwrights Hamish which is by Wannop’s Guacho and out of Wainwrights Freya herself by Callacrag Bull’s Eye.

The very next lot, Todhall Harper ET, which stood Male and Supreme Champion, also made 1250gns when knocked down to RA Harrison. This Wannop’s Godfather son is out of the Kingledores Warrior daughter, Todhall Brooke.

Travelling north from Rowen, Conwy, Dayfdd Owen saw his Smart Ass Just The Job top the ram lamb trade at 600gns when snapped up by GG Burton. Born in February out of the Smart Ass Dark Horse-sired Smart Ass Fairy Dust, he is by Dooley Bulldozer.

Matching that 600gns was Dafydd’s Smart Ass Hopscotch ET which this time is by Langlands Epic and out of Smart Ass Dream Girl, an Ardstewart Aristocrat daughter. She also heads to Mottram St Andrew with WD Hatch and Co.

Averages: 14 shearling rams, £904 (12 x £732 in 2022); two ram lambs, £525 (four x £585); 12 shearling ewes, £421 (10 x £572); two ewe lambs, £263.
