Melton Mowbray in-lamb

26th November 2022

Gee Crabtree, Crabtree Flock

Females met a select trade at the Beltex Sheep Society’s offering at Melton Mowbray Market’s Winter Warmers sale on Saturday, 26 November, where a shearling ewe from Victoria and Gillian Bowring topped the trade at 750gns.

That was their Windmill Gertrude ET, a daughter of Murrays Expert bred from the Murrays Code-sired Matt’s Demi Lovato. She sold over the water to Matthew Burleigh for his Matt’s Flock bear Shanra, Kinawley, having ran with Matt’s Dancer.

The Bowrings, from Nether Langwith, Mansfield, also welcomed the second highest price when a full sister named Windmill Gabby ET sold to Leah Dallow, for 480gns having also ran with Matt’s Dancer.

At 450gns when sold to PA and HM Coles, Towcester Road, Silverstone, was Windmill Giggle ET, which again ran with Matt’s Dancer. Her pedigree also features Murrays Expert, this time on to the Arkle DJ-sired Kingledores Ellie.

Elsewhere, Matt Prince saw his two gimmers sell for 450gns apiece to Harry Hawkins and Partners for their Touchwood Flock near Cowfold, both in lamb to Airyolland King of Clubs. First was Stonedge Greco Bianco ET, which is by Y Bedol Tayto and out of a Belgian ewe, followed by Stonedge Gomphrena which was this time by Matt’s Ficku and out of Stonedge Exterminator, a Stonedge Dazzler daughter.

Leading the reduction of Anthony Neaves’ Peachy View Flock from Staplehurst, Tonbridge, was Peachy View Emu, an Airyolland Commander daughter which sold to Evan Jones for his Merton Hall Flock near Smithy Fen, Cottenham. Bred from a Bishops ewe, she was served by Wannop’s Gladiator.

With all the Peachy View ewes selling in lamb to Wannop’s Gladiator, Christopher Grainger paid 350gns for Peachy View Eclair, which was this time by Wilodge Crafty and out of a different Bishops ewe. She joins the Whiteley Farm Flock near Ripley.

Leah Dallow was in buying mode when she paid a further 350gns twice. Firstly for Peachy View Eskimo which was also by Wilodge Crafty and out of a Bishops ewe, and again for a Wilodge Crafty daughter this time bred from a Peachy View Banter daughter.

Averages: 14 shearling ewes, £364. Peachy View reduction – 17 aged ewes, £275; seven ewe lambs, £185.
