Entries from Colin Root’s Freckleton flock and Louise Elworthy’s Fingle flock headed up the Beltex entry at the NSA sale at Kivells’ Exeter centre on Wednesday, 18 August, with one from each topping the sale at 650gns.

The sale saw averages drop in all sections but for many more sold as 21 shearling ewes averaged £394 (15 x £435 in 2020) with five ewe lambs at £338, four aged rams at £236 (1 x £399) and 29 shearling rams at £444 (22 x £506). No ram lambs were sold.

First to sell for that 650gns top price when knocked down to Lorna and Victoria Gregory for their Bursyepark flock near Boyton, Launceston, was Colin’s shearling ewe called Freckleton Freckles. She is sired by Brickrow Bronze and out of the Hackney Waldo daughter, Freckleton Calla.

Colin, from Wormleighton, Southam, welcomed a further 600gns twice and 550gns for shearling rams. Selling to EJ Hosegood, Zeal Monachorum, Crediton, was Freckleton Franco, again by Brickrow Bronze and out of a Hackney Waldo daughter, this time Freckleton Angelica.

Greg Dufosee, Spectra flock, Longbridge Deverill, Warminster, paid 600gns for the very next lot, Freckleton Frostbite. Featuring a similar pedigree, Frostbite is another by the Brickrow ram but this time out of Freckleton Code Buster, a Woodies Alvin daughter.

At 550gns when knocked down to NE Porter, Raglan, Gwent, was Freckleton Fredo which offers some different breeding, being by Topflite Chief and out of the Kingledores Wigglesworth-sired Freckleton Dior.

Louise Elworthy received her 650gns bid from J Lukehurst, Hinxhill, Ashford, for her first shearling ram on offer, Fingle Flying Scotsman, which is by Finniness Comic and out of Fingle Cappicino, a Swell Angus daughter.

The same buyer paid a further 600gns for the very next lot, Fingle Fleming, which is again by Finniness Comic and out of a Swelle Angus daughter, this time Fingle Dawn.

Louise’s Fingle flock from Crockernwell, Exeter, also welcomed 550gns from DR Arnold, Morchard Road, Crediton, for Fingle Flagged, this time by Fingle El Capitain and out of Fingle Bandcamp, a Teirn Valley Talisman daughter.

Females also reached 550gns for the last shearling ewe on offer, Tracey Cobbledick’s Swelle Fudge from Poundstock, Bude. Selling to Jack Simpson for his Hunrosa flock near Foxhole, Beaworthy, she is by Swelle Crackerjack and out of Swelle Breeze, herself by Damside Willys Up.
