With grass still in short supply down country and many lamb producers buying in reduced numbers of commercial females, Beltex rams met a select demand at the Welsh Beltex Club’s Sale at Ruthin Farmers on Tuesday, 13 September, where a shearling ram from Les and Sian Hewitt topped the entry at 950gns.

Their leader from their Southern Acres Flock near Wrexham Road, Penyffordd, was Southern Acres Genesis which was full of home breeding, being by Southern Acres Dude and out of Southern Acres Dimitri, herself a Skiddaw View Big Lad daughter. Forking out the 950gns to take him back to Harbour Lane, Wheelton, Chorley, was the team at Eck Civil Engineering.

Genesis’ twin brother, Southeran Acres Gofor, had one lot earlier realised 750gns when knocked down to G Howatson, Queens Road, Llandudno.

Second in the trade stakes was Cerin Glyndwr from Wyn Evans which made 850gns when sold to RF Hughes, Llanbedr, Gwynedd. This son of Woodies Energetic is out of the Cerin Colin-sired Cerin Eirwen.

Wyn’s flock from Cemmaes Road, Machynlleth, welcomed a further 700gns for another by the Woodies ram, Cerin Gildas. Bred from another Cerin Colin daughter in the shape of Cerin Ebrill, he caught the eye of Mrs Gwenfair Jones and Sons of Cwmtirmynach, Bala.

Also welcoming a good trade were Michael and Heulwen Owens who saw their dearest, Glantre Glenmorangie, sell to HW Watkins, Llanfihangel, Llanfyllin, for 800gns. This first prize shearling that also stood Reserve Male is by the 10,000gns Airyolland Echo Beach, while his dam is the Rathbone Brandon daughter, Glantre Clementine.

The Owens, from Pontsian, Llandysul, also sold Bailey Brook Get Me In, originally bred by Dermot Costelloe, for 700gns. This Muirton Ernie son is out of the Hackney Cocky-sired Bailey Brook Damson Gin and heads to Chapel Street, Aberffraw, Ynys Mon, with D Hughes.

Glantre Gromit, this time by Artnagullion Dupe and out of an Airyolland Sundance daughter, heads to Rhyd Y Foel, Abergele, with Jonathan Rees.

Aled Roberts, from Pen Bryn Llwyn, Llanrhaeadr, had two at 600gns. Firstly his shearling ram, Greenvale Gai, a Pigot First Class son, which also sold to Eck Civil Engineering.

The other at that price was Greenvale Harry ET, a ram lamb by Airyolland Weapon bred from the Staddlestone Carmichael daughter, Greenvale Ellie. He sold to Scott Wooley, Lower Mountain Road, Penyffordd.

Females met a more buoyant demand to increase in average on the year and it was Dafydd Owen’s Female and Supreme Champion, Smart Ass Godiva, that led the way when she sold to Aled Hughes for his Lixwm Flock near Holywell for 650gns. Her pedigree features Ardstewart Aristocrat on to the Airyolland Weapon-sired Woodies Chloris.

Aled paid a further 480gns for the previous lot, Smart Ass Godess ET from the flock near Rowen, Conwy. Bred from the Ardstewart Aristocrat daughter, Smart Ass Duchess, she is by Clary Dumfries.

Averages: 11 shearling ewes, £385 (19 x £354 in 2021); 37 shearling rams, £511 (61 x £577); five ram lambs, £494 (7 x £443).
