Mortons Champion tops Stirling at 3,500gns

The Beltex Scotland sale at United Auctions, Stirling on Saturday 21st September 2024, held under the auspices of the Beltex Sheep Society and kindly sponsored by Johnston Carmichael, saw a total 70 tups sold to a top of 3,500gns and an average of £942.

A January-2023 shearling, by the influential,10,000gns sire, Gyffin Dexter who has bred sons to 17,000gns, led the Beltex show taking the tri-coloured sash and overall championship title while also topping the sale at 3,500gns for Mr A Morton, Lochend Farm, Denny. He was sold in a two-way split to Fisher Contracting Ltd, Perth and Messrs Wright, Argarty, Doune. Fisher contracting Ltd also paid 1,800gns for Mortons John Boy, a Mortons Gremlin ET x Hackney French Lady ET.

Standing reserve overall champion which was judged by Mr George Whyte of the Pett Flock, Muthill, Crieff was Andrew Baillie’s February-2023 single ET-bred shearling, Callacrag Jaguar ET sired by the 8,000gns Wannop’s Firecracker ET sire, and bred from the Hackney Braveheart daughter, Callacrag Caprice, he realised the second highest price of 3,000gns and joined Tormitchell Farms, Girvan Ayrshire. Callacrag sold three shearlings to an average of £1715.

The Mortons flock also realised 2,000gns a piece for two further March-2023 born Gyffin Dexter’s sons, Mortons Jamie a triplet bred from homebred Mortons Elspeth was sold to Messrs Hunter, Insch, Aberdeenshire while Doune Farms, Ardgaty, Doune purchased Mortons Judo ET a Gyffin Dexter x Hackney French Lady ET son as well as twin Mortons Jupiter by Mortons Gremlin ET for 1,500gns and March-2023 single, Mortons Jackaroo bred from Homebred Mortons Ego for 1,200gns. They also paid 1,400gns for W D Stephen & Co’s Glencoe Jack ET by Lakeview Gypsy King and 850gns for Ochtermuthill Josie by Mortons Freelance from D S & R C Taylor, Crieff.  The Morton’s string of eight commanded the highest average of the day at £1903.

Duncan McVicar, from the Fyne flock, Lephinhall, Stranchur sold five to an average of £1029, his top was 2,000gns for an April-2023 ET-bred Fyne Jasper ET a Faughill Goldrush ET x Brickrow Flameproof, he travelled home with Messrs Steele, Pitroddie, Perth.

The largest consignment came from D S & R C Taylor, of the Ochtermuthill flock from Muthill, Crieff who sold eighteen shearlings to a top of 1,800gns twice and an average of £889.58. The 1,800gns shearlings were both sired by Wannops Guard of Honour ET the first a twin, bred from Ochtermuthill Eirian went home with Messrs Kennedy, Aberfeldy, Perth while Monzie Farms, Gilmerton, Crieff went to the same money for triplet Ochtermuthill Jackison bred from Ochtermuthill Faryn.

Messrs Kennedy, Pilochry, Perth paid 1,600gns for ET bred Mortons Jolly Rodger from Mr A Morton, Denny and the judge Mr George Whyte, Muthill, Crieff paid 1,600gns for A & M Dunlop’s March-2023 twin, Broughton Joppa sired by Brilley Heatwave ET out of Broughton Grace.

Crowhill Jumbo from Messrs Dunlop, sired by Borderesk Finders Keepers found a new postcode for 1,400gns he was purchased by Messrs Graham, Doune, Perthshire while Messrs McGregor, Milnathort Kinross paid 1,300gns for J W Cowans ET-bred Brickrow Jealousy by the tup he purchased at Skipton in October 2021, Ainstable Ferocious.
