It was the Male and Supreme Champion from Dafydd Jones’ Frongoy Flock that proved to be the star attraction at the Welsh Beltex Club’s Welsh Premier at Welshpool Livestock Market on Wednesday, 30 August.
A strong, steady demand was witnessed throughout from commercial producers with many of the top prices coming later in the sale. Setting the top price of 3000gns was Dafydd’s Frongoy Harry ET, which is a son of Osprey Geronimo and out of Rathbone Dala, a Y Bedol A-Team daughter from the flock near Pennant, Llannon, Aberystwyth. Picked out by judge, Alfie Taylor, of the Heatheryhall Flock, Harry went on to sell for the top price when knocked down to Lowri Williams for her Rhyd Flock near Lampeter, Ceredigion.
Even later on, Edward Cyril Lloyd Lewis and grandson, Alex Martin, saw their three entries make 2800gns, 2100gns and 2000gns.
Dearest when sold to EG Morgan for the Beacons Flock near Sennybridge, Brecon, was Gyffin Harvest Moon which stood second at the pre-sale show. Sired by Buckles Filthy Rich, his dam is the Balbrydie Winston-sired Gyffin Faye.
Next at 2100gns for the duo from Llanwrst Road, Gyffin, Conwy, was Gyffin Hapy Chappy ET which this time sold to D Hughes for his Ffraw Flock near Aberffraw, Anglesey. He offers some different breeding being by Ardstewart Armani and out of Artnagullion Embrace, herself by Tercrosset Blaze.
His full brother, Gyffin Henry ET, sold to S and RE Williamson, Hamsterley, Bishop Auckland, for 2000gns.
Next in the trade stakes at 2400gns was Hardy Harry from R Hardman, Shrawardine, Shrewsbury. Sired by Wannop’s Fondant Fancy and out of Hardy Cola, by a Belgian ram called Bulldozer, Harry caught the eye of Eynon Farms, Beulah, Ceredigion.
Close behind on 2200gns was Brilley Hooch from newly married couple, Jamie and Rhian Jerman, Llanafan, Builth Wells. Selling to JT Rowlands, Llanddeusant, Hollyhead, his pedigree features Fronarth Fred on to the Swffryd Exclusive daughter, Brilley Flirty N Dirty.
Husband and wife team, Michael and Heulwen Owens, Pontsian, Llandysul. were in the money with rams at 2100gns and 1750gns, both of which were sired by Artnagullion Dupe. Selling to EH Pennie and Son, Llandyssil, Montgomery, was Glantre Hunter which is out of Glantre Foxy, herself by Ardstewart Comanche.
Bred from another Ardstewart Comanche daughter in the shape of Glantre Fern, Glantre Hooch ET sold to HBJ Farms, Rhayader, for 1750gns.
Making the long journey south from Brampton worthwhile, James Whiteford saw his Tercrosset Henry sell to R Lewis, Cwmdeuddwr, also Rhayader, for 1500gns. This lad is by Glan-Y-Mor Freddo while his dam is Tercrosset Walk The Walk, an Airyolland King of Clubs daughter.
Sticking with the male entry and Paul Tippetts saw his Reserve Male Champion, Hackney Jurassic ET, sell to the team at Whitecairn Farm, Lockerbie, for 1500gns. This prize winner is by the 12,000gns Ardstewart Fred Flintstone and out of Hackney Goddess, herself by Lakeview Doozer.
Paul and Gerwyn Jones then saw their Pager Junks ET, this time by Clary Fork Out and out of the Belvoir View Firefox-sired Corra Go Lightly, sell to GG and H Sevenoaks, Llwynddu, Abergavenny, for 800gns.
Aged rams met a strong trade and leading this section was Dafydd Lewis’ Ainstable Flagpole, a Withy Trees Da Bonana King-sired three-shear originally bred by Brian Hall. Out of the Woodies Wicker daughter, Ainstable Demurre, Flagpole heads to Melinywig, Corwen, with A Evans.
Dafydd Owen’s Female Champion, Smart Ass Headturner ET, led the females when sold to Sean Forshaw of the Meadowside Flock near Preston for 1600gns. Another by Buckles Filthy Rich, she is out of the Ardstewart Aristocrat daughter, Smart Ass Duchess, from the flock near Rowen, Conwy.
The Reserve Female, James Whiteford’s Tercrosset Hard Working Girl, was next at 900gns when sold to CR Parry, Llangoed, Beaumaris. Of similar breeding to her 1500gns flock mate, she is by Glan-Y-Mor Freddo while her dam is Tercrosset Alabama, an Airyolland King of Clubs daughter.
Ali Jackson from near Annan saw his Tiptop High Card sell to G Parry, Llanfigael, Anglesey, for 850gns. Her pedigree features Ardstewart Fire Balls on to the Ainstable Aristotle-bred Tiptop Claudia.
Averages: Four aged rams, £864 (4 x £530); 151 shearling rams, £814 (178 x £860); seven ram lambs, £740 (5 x £374); 58 shearling ewes, £436 (57 x £413).
