King Kong climbs to the top at Welsh Premier Sale

Strong trade from start to finish saw a 93% clearance at the Beltex Welsh Premier Sale, held at Welshpool Livestock Market on behalf of the Welsh Beltex Club, with shearling rams leading the way at 6500gns.

Topping the trade was Pager King Kong, a shearling ram from the Pager flock of Tippetts and Jones, Lodge Hill Farm, Shropshire. Born in March 2024, the son of Buckles Fury out of Mortons Glory was knocked down to J R Joseph, Lloyney, Powys, for 6500gns.

Next best at 3000gns was Myna Kyson, from the Evans family’s Myna flock. Sired by Lurg Harriss Gin and out of a homebred ewe, Myna Gabby, it was purchased by D Morris, Treborth Uchaf Farm, Bangor.

Close behind at 2700gns was Greenvale Kayden from Aled Roberts, a March 2024-born shearling ram by Hackney Judge and out of Greenvale Hillary. It sold to E H Pennie & Son, Gwern-yr-ychain, Powys.

Trade remained strong with Glantre Kasper, from M&H Owens. By Lurg Gullit and out of a homebred ewe, it sold for 2500gns to Dan Jones, The Hollies, Pontyclun.

Aled Roberts’ Greenvale flock was also in the money again when his shearling Greenvale Kaleb sold for 2400gns to P Price, Lower Sgynlas, Glasbury.

Aged rams topped at 2700gns for Pager Hackney Jonesy, bred by Paul Tippetts. By Ardstewart Fred Flintstone and out of Hackney Ghost, the 2023-born ram sold to J T Rowlands, Mynydd Adda, Anglesey.

Females met a solid demand, peaking at 2600gns for Gyffin Kalani, a shearling ewe from E C L Lewis’ Gyffin flock. By Lipley Hercules and out of Gyffin Echo, she sold to RV and GE Jones, Pentre Farm, Wrexham.

Pre-sale show

In the pre-sale show, judged by Robert Garth of the Keasden flock, the champion rosette was awarded to Pager King of the Jungle, another shearling ram from the Pager flock, which later sold for 2000gns to D Morris.

Reserve champion was Crew Lion Heart, a ram lamb from Rhys Francis’ Crew flock, Carmarthenshire, which also topped the lamb trade at 1000gns, selling to S Wood, Broadwater Farm, Skene.

Mr Garth said: “I very much enjoyed judging such strong stock, which was reflected throughout in the day’s solid trade.”

Speaking after the sale, auctioneer Tom Davies of Welshpool Livestock Market said: “We didn’t think it would be quite as good as it has been. A 93% clearance rate through all the sections topping at 6500gns is really good. Across the board unbelievable today.”
